Jekel Vineyards Debuts New Label Honoring Monterey

Monterey County, California (February 14, 2006) -- Jekel Vineyards, which helped bring attention to the potential of the Central Coast more than three decades ago, has debuted a new label inspired by artist Michael Schwab focusing on the heritage of Monterey and the exceptional vineyards found in the region.

Along with the new package design, Jekel has introduced an off-dry Gewürztraminer to complement the much-awarded off-dry Jekel Riesling, and also returned a Monterey Pinot Noir to Jekel's varietal offerings, which include Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, all sourced from the Central Coast, including the famed Sanctuary and Gravelstone vineyards.

"Bill Jekel was a true pioneer and untiring advocate for the potential of the Central Coast and in particular, Monterey," explained John Hudson, National Brand Director for Jekel. "His vision lives on in the exceptional wines we produce today."

The new label features a distinctive weathervane sitting atop a cupola, often seen on the weathered barns and agricultural buildings throughout the region. Strong afternoon winds that blow in from the Pacific each afternoon across the Gabilan mountain range make weathervanes dance, says Hudson, "and grapevines are blessed with a cool, extended growing season that allows for the development of complex, rich flavors with distinctive mineral nuances." The labels are colored in shades of yellow and orange, representing the rising and setting sun.

Jekel Gewürztraminer is styled to complement spicy dishes often found in Asian or fusion cuisine and, like the companion Jekel Riesling, contains residual sugar just above one percent, considered off-dry. Jekel's new Pinot Noir offering is typical of the flavorful, lighter styles common to Monterey.
