Home > Drink Responsibly

Most of us have done it, but shouldn't have. Some of us learn our lesson the easy way, some the expensive way, some the emotional way, some refuse to learn and some never get the opportunity to learn from their mistake.

For your own safety and the safety of others on the roads, it is your responsibility to drink responsibly and never drive while intoxicated.

I, the creator of ShotDrinks.com, was fortunate enough to learn my lesson without hurting anyone else and with limited injuries to myself.

Around 12:10 am on November 22, 2006 I was driving home from a couple bars. I was less than a mile from my house when I saw headlights coming directly at me in my lane as I neared a narrow bridge. When I slammed on my brakes, my car stalled. I lost power steering and flew off the road hitting a few trees. When I hit the trees, my computer monitor in the back seat flew forward, nailing me in the head and knocking me out.

I woke up a few minutes later and realized I was upside down. I attempted to get out of my seatbelt, but couldn't. I remember seeing blood everywhere, didn't know how bad I was hurt, eventually gave up on trying to get out and made up my mind that this was it.

About thirty minutes passed and I awoke again. This time I was able to get out of the seatbelt and dropped to the ceiling. I crawled out the passenger window. I made two more trips back into the car looking for my cellphone and keys. My only thoughts were to call someone and to get my keys in case I didn't get ahold of anyone and had to walk. I was still completely out of it from being knocked out. I immediately called my parents, who rushed me to the hospital.

My only injuries were a laceration on my head that required five staples, a cut ear that ended up getting severely infected and took about two weeks to heal after being on antibiotics for a week, an extremely sore body that took nearly a week to ease up and random dreams about the situation.

The officer that showed up at the hospital said it looks like my car rode up the last tree about 15' before flipping and landing on the roof. If I would have gone 25' further, I would have dropped about 10' into a creek. Needless to say, my car was totalled. The officer said I am extremely lucky I walked away with as few injuries as I did... or even walked away at all. More than that, I'm thankful that no one else was involved in the accident.

I use to be concerned with driving drunk only because of the financial and legal burden of a DWI. While I didn't get a DWI, I learned that there's a lot more at stake than a DWI... it's called a matter of life and death.

Please, drink responsibly and NEVER drive while intoxicated.
